High School recruiting: Alcatraz Outlaws change nomination process – tryouts will determine team

***Important news about changes in the selection process for the Alcatraz Outlaws***

After a long and successful run with one team selection process, NorCal's high-profile Alcatraz Outlaws are making a process change; They are adding self-nominations – see their nomination webpage at:
http://alcatrazoutlaws.com/?page_id=893

Outlaws staff will then check with a player's coaches (and others) and respond to players with an evaluation. •••Now is the time to get those nominations in! •••

The evaluation response received by nominees will tell the players whether, or not, they are invited to tryouts, to be held on August 24th and 25th at Treasure Island.

In addition, the Outlaws are broadening the age range of the teams they'll coach. Here are the age/grade ranges the Outlaws will be coaching next summer. Players seeking to participate on ANY Outlaws team must fill out the nomination forms

On August 24th and 25th the Outlaw staff will be conducting an Invite Only Evaluation for the following teams:

  • 7th Grade
  • 8th Grade
  • 9th Grade
  • 10th Grade
  • 11th Grade
My surmise is that earlier and earlier recruiting by college coaches is partly responsible for this expansion. However, younger Outlaws will also have an opportunity to learn the methods, offensive/defensive schemes, and systems used by the Outlaws. I suspect these learning experiences will prove beneficial to younger players.

The Outlaws are one of only a very few NorCal teams who travel to the East Coast to participate in what are, essentially, recruiting tournaments. Their team success on trips to King of the Hill and the Gait Cup have made them one of the top Club teams in the nation.

Of course, there are other methods to get recruited. Peter Worstell's California Gold is another example, in a different format. But, going to where the coaches live certainly makes life easier for the college coaches. I'm a fan of both enterprises.

The key takeaway for the Outlaws is: nominate yourself NOW.

Disclosure statement:
My Son plays NCAA DI lacrosse at Yale. As his Mother and I planned out his recruiting activities, we relied on the assistance of the following entities: Matt Ogelsby at All West Lacrosse helped us assess the colleges where our Son would be a good fit. Peter Worstell, via California Gold, provided a vehicle for a large number of college coaches to evaluate him. The Outlaws took him East, where the Yale coaches, among others, evaluated him over several games. That's where he ended up.

From one parent to another, I'd happily recommend using any or all of these entities.

Having said that, in my opinion, there is no substitute for the Varsity Coach of a player's High School team being involved in the recruiting process. However, I believe there are only a handful of Varsity coaches who have the chops to cause college coaches to stand at attention when they hear from one of these coaches. Coaches Chris Packard of St. Ignatius and Peter Worstell of San Ramon Valley come to mind, though I suspect there are others. If your Son has such a Coach, you'd be well advised to involve him in the recruiting process.

High School recruiting: Alcatraz Outlaws at 2013 Gait Cup & King of the Hill: Season recap

Action at the Gait Cup is hot and heavy. The round of 8 has been determined and both Outlaws 2014 and 2015 teams are in that elite group. I don't know the bracket structure, but it is possible that two victories by both the 2014 and 2015 teams would pit one Outlaw team against the other in the finals! I'll post more as I got additional information.
–––––––––––––––
The 2014 Alcatraz Outlaws, after taking the Championship at King of the Hill, were upset in the Elite Eight at the Gait Cup. They had a heckuva run. Between the two tournaments, they came away with one Championship and only a single loss. Congrats to the 2014s for repping NorCal and the Outlaws so well. They had quite a season. Two tournaments, one Championship, and only one loss! Here they are in their Championship picture at King of the Hill:

Alcatraz Outlaws 2014 team: Champions at King of the Hill

The 2015s are still alive at the Gait Cup. They won their Elite eight round and now move to the semi-finals. Go 2015s!

Update: The 2015 Outlaws won their semi-final match, but the Looney's prevailed in the Championship game.

How amazing for NorCal lacrosse to send two squads to two elite tournaments and perform so well. Congratulations to the players and to their coaches!

Season recap: The two Outlaws teams played in 27 games this tournament season, finishing with a combined record of 24-3.

What began as the dream of three coaches, has turned into an amazing reality. They participate at the same two, highly regarded,  tournaments each year and, I believe, have never had a losing record for the summer. In the beginning, they were unknown and unheralded, but they were also UNDAUNTED! They are no longer unknown and no longer unheralded. The following quote from the coach of a competitor team at the Gait Cup says it all. Talking to his team, as they were about to play the Outlaws, he said, "Now, you're gonna try to beat the team that every team in the country wants to beat."

Impact on NorCal Lacrosse: This has been a wonderful year for NorCal lacrosse, what with Marin teams performing so well in NCS, and St. Ignatius finishing 12th in the country in LaxPower's combined Coaches and Computer poll, while nearly pulling off the first California win, ever, against a national top 10 team (Chaminade), but the cumulative reputation created for Northern California lacrosse by the Alcatraz Outlaws is right up there! Trying to rank these three wonderful accomplishments would be, I think, a mistake. They are all amazing, and they all demonstrate the growing force that is – NORCAL LACROSSE!

High School: Gathering of Outlaws Alumni, Part II

35 Outlaw alums showed up for the Alumni game, representing 27 NCAA schools, including UVA, UNC, DUKE, PENN STATE, NOTRE DAME, MICHIGAN, YALE, HARVARD, DARTMOUTH, MIDDLEBURY, AMHERST, BUCKNELL, HAVERFORD, COLBY, FAIRFIELD, GEORGETOWN, PROVIDENCE, DENVER, BRYANT, CORNELL, BROWN, ST. MARYS'S, HOLY CROSS, PRINCETON, NAVY, LEHIGH AND KENYON.

Let me put that in perspective. More NCAA Outlaw Alums participated in the Outlaw Alumni game than on any  Lacrosse Field in San Francisco since the 2012 San Francisco Fall Lacrosse Classic, pitting Ohio State vs. Lehigh!

Seen in the crowd

More Former Outlaws:
Can you name them? Both former SI, both DI bound this Fall. Both terrific players. Prize to the first correct respondent!
Teammates on NCJLA Vail teams, NorCal Braves, and Alcatraz Outlaws: Carson Mead, Jordan LaTendresse, and Jordan Weiss (another Penn State guy)
Joe Lang (SI and future Harvard)

See part I of this article at:

Recruiting: Gathering of Outlaws Alumni, Part I

Every year, the management of the Alcatraz Outlaws sponsors an Alumni game. Former Outlaws, back from college, confront the current crop of Outlaws in a friendly. It's a great opportunity for the college guys to see their former teammates and get caught up. The Outlaws management always provides terrific food to players, parents, and assorted fans!

It's also an opportunity for parents of former Outlaws to get to visit once again. That's a really important thing for parents, who used to see each other all the time when the games were thirty miles, or less, apart. Now, arranging parent get togethers, with the boys all scattered along the East Coast and Midwest is often impossible. So, the gathering of Outlaws is just as important to the parents as it is to the boys.

This year's Alumni game drew great players and a great crowd. Here are a few pictures of this past Saturday's get together:

Joe Lang to Harvard

Joe Lang

Joe Lang, SI's rising Junior Attack has committed to the admissions process at Harvard. The flashy lefty – and younger brother of Cornell All-American Roy Lang – also wrestled with offers from Princeton and Duke.

Joe had a wonderful summer on the recruiting circuit. Playing for the Alcatraz Outlaws, he made the All-Star teams at both the Gait Cup and King of the Hill.

I've had the good fortune to watch Joe play most of his regular season games since he was in 6th grade. It was evident then that he was destined to become a special player. He was a key member of the Attack line this past season at St. Ignatius, which line Coach Chris Packard has called "the most productive Attack line in SI history."

And so the NorCal pipeline to the Ivy League continues. There are seven lacrosse playing schools in the Ancient Eight (only Columbia does not field a men's team) and each of the Ivies has at least one NorCal guy on the squad or committed and on the way!

Congratulations, Joe!

Aran Roberts to Princeton

Heard on the sidelines...
Aran Roberts, San Ramon Valley's outstanding defender, has verballed to Princeton.* The rising Junior has been the subject of lots of chatter on the recruiting circuit this summer, making the All-Star teams at both King of the Hill and Gait Cup tournaments. The Dilettante first noticed him at De La Salle's Enea Sports Complex in 2011, where the then-Freshmen Wolves' close D looked very athletic in a losing cause against the Spartan. This past season the Wolves' Soph had a very nice game against the SI Wildcats, primarily during some one-on-one match ups against the Wildcat's top Soph, Joe Lang. Coach Bates and his Princeton Tiger's staff made a great decision. Congrats to Aran Roberts, his family, and the San Ramon Lacrosse coaches!. They've collaborated in the production of a good one!

The Dilettante hears that additional Ivy League commitments by NorCal laxers are coming soon. Stay tuned!

______________
* In the Ivy League, a verbal commitment is made between Coach and Player. Only the Admissions Office can make the official offer.
